Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Execute and optimize protocols for the preparation of microbially-produced biomaterials at up to 25L fermentation scales.
- Plan and execute workflows for microbial cultivation at varying culture scales and forms using sterile techniques in up to a BSL2 laboratory setting, followed by the recovery and purification of the biomaterial product.
- Conduct biomaterial post-processing and characterization steps, which may require coordinating with facility personnel.
- Conduct experiments to understand biological behavior.
- Design and execute experiments that implement various techniques for direct and indirect observation of microbial behavior, particularly biomaterial production and properties, and harnessing behavior for precision material assembly.
- Experiments may use microscopy, fluorescence analysis via multi-well plate reader or flow cytometry, and enzymatic or molecular assays.
- Agents for the functionalization, immobilization, fixation, or entrapment of cells or biomaterial product may be required within the experiments to advance the research goals.
- Set up and maintain microbial cultures in specified environments and scales using sterile technique, autoclaving equipment, nutrient broth and agar plate preparation, inoculation, culture management, biohazardous waste disposal, and preparation of frozen stocks.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and batch records to execute production processes
