POSITION OVERVIEW
The Controls Engineer provides engineering and technical support for automation and control systems used in water and wastewater treatment facilities. This role requires strong expertise in industrial control systems and the ability to execute control system projects through all phases of delivery.
Responsibilities include working with municipal and industrial clients to understand operational needs; contributing to project scoping and cost estimates; and designing, programming, testing, commissioning, and handing over control systems. The engineer will help ensure systems meet applicable industry standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations for reliability, cybersecurity, and maintainability.
The ideal candidate is proficient in PLC programming and HMI/SCADA development for water and wastewater applications, including pump stations, treatment processes, and distribution and collection systems. Experience integrating field instrumentation (flow, level, pressure, and analyzers), VFDs, and networked control systems is required.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND ROLES
- Write detailed specifications, design guides and user manuals.
- Design control systems for customers.
- Program PLCs.
- Build PC based SCADA systems (Iconics, Citect, Intellution, Wonderware, etc.).
- Build/program complete systems in-house.
- Simulate, test, and debug system in-house.
- Install/startup system at customer site.
- Provide system technical support over phone or on-site.
- Maintain schedules of all current projects.
- Assume other duties upon request.

Requirements
- Applicable degree preferred.
- Typically requires 7+ years’ experience.
- Work requires an extensive knowledge of business as position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy.
- The ability to speak and understand English in a manner that is sufficient for effective communication with supervisors, employees, beneficiaries, and customers, based on the assumption that such individuals can only speak and understand English.
- Independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language required.
- Experiences should include PLCs, PCs, HMI/SCADA software, device communications and networking.
- Project Management experience is a plus.
