Title: Director of Human Resources
Position: Full-Time Permanent
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, hours subject to flexibility (flexible work options are negotiable based on operational parameters). Some evening and weekend commitments required.
Job Location: Sydney, NS

The Director of Human Resources (HR) at Breton Ability is a key leadership role responsible for providing strategic oversight of all HR functions within a unionized environment, ensuring policies and programs promote a positive, inclusive workplace culture. This includes directing efforts in recruitment, talent development, employee engagement, performance management, and succession planning to maintain a highly skilled workforce, while ensuring strict compliance with employment laws, including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles. Crucially, this Director also provides strong strategic governance over the Information Technology (IT) department, overseeing data security, privacy, regulatory compliance, and driving the strategic development of IT infrastructure to support digital transformation and enhance operational efficiency. The Director of Human Resources is central to advancing the organization’s mission, fostering a culture of innovation, and upholding human rights and well-being for all individuals.

Core Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and implement strategic plans to advance Breton Ability’s mission and objectives.
- Foster a culture of innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement through advocacy and community engagement.
- Lead the organization in adapting to evolving policies and best practices in disability support.
- Drive initiatives that promote the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities.
Human Resources Oversight:
- Oversee the Human Resources department, ensuring policies, programs, and initiatives align with organizational goals and promote a positive, inclusive workplace culture within a unionized environment.
- Provide strategic direction on recruitment, talent development, employee engagement, and retention efforts to support a highly skilled workforce.
- Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations, including those related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Guide the HR team to develop performance management and succession planning frameworks that support staff growth and organizational sustainability.
- Lead initiatives related to employee well-being, training, and professional development, promoting a supportive and motivated work environment.
Information Technology Oversight:
- Oversee the Information Technology (IT) department, ensuring data security, privacy, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Provide strategic direction for the development and execution of Information Technology (IT) strategies aligned with organizational goals, driving innovation and digital transformation.
- Oversee planning, implementation, and maintenance of IT infrastructure, systems, and applications.
- Assist with evaluating emerging technologies and trends, recommending solutions to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
Continuous Improvement & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and a commitment to upholding human rights as outlined by the Nova Scotia Human Rights Remedy.
- Commit to improving the outcomes for individuals transitioning to the community with support from Breton Ability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology, or a related field is required.
- Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) or similar is preferred.
- Minimum of six (6) years’ proven experience in a senior leadership role, preferably in the healthcare or non-profit sector.
- Previous experience leading or managing diverse teams in a unionized environment is preferred.
- Proven expertise in developing and executing strategic plans for both Human Resources and Information Technology operations is required.
- Deep understanding of disability rights and the Nova Scotia Human Rights Remedy is considered an asset.
- Experience working with individuals of varying abilities is considered an asset.
- Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams toward achieving strategic objectives for the organization.
- Strong background in managing full-cycle HR operations, including talent acquisition, employee relations, compensation, and compliance.
- Position-related technical skills and experience in overseeing IT infrastructure, data security, privacy, and digital transformation.
- Exceptional collaboration skills when working with the Senior Management Team and Board of Directors.
- Growth mindset and strategic thinker with a track record of driving operational processes and delivering results in a complex and dynamic environment.
- Excellent analytical thinking and innovative skills to push the organization forward.
- Ability to commit to the mission and values of Breton Ability while promoting inclusion, respect, and empowerment of individuals with diverse abilities to enhance their lives and wellbeing.
- Exude a high level of professionalism and integrity with highly developed interpersonal and diplomacy skills.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail, a high regard for accuracy and the ability to provide high-quality outputs.
- Valid driver's license and clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check are required.
