The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Immunology, is seeking a full-time technician to support newly funded research programs. The Cortez lab investigates mucosal tissue immune responses in homeostasis and during infection, focusing primarily on innate lymphoid cell responses. There are opportunities for independent projects within the mission of the laboratory, based on the applicant's skills and goals. Applicants that are interested in having their own independent project are encouraged to apply.
The applicant will support the function of the laboratory and assist scientists conducting experiments in cellular and molecular immunology. The applicant should have experience with flow cytometry and basic immunological techniques. A significant task will include maintenance of the mouse colony, which includes breeding, PCR-based genotyping, and record keeping. The applicant should be very eager to learn new techniques and improve existing techniques.
Other required skills: Excellent organizational and planning skills, and attention to detail, are essential. Strong mathematical skills related to the biological sciences, including dilutions, ratios, concentrations, etc. Must keep detailed and accurate records. Excellent writing and verbal communication. Proven ability to work independently and in collaborative teams. Experience with University of Pittsburgh systems and processes for purchasing and ordering is preferred.
Job Summary
Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.
Essential Functions
1. Perform independent laboratory work and experiments, including analysis and interpretation of murine and human cell culture experiments. These will involve cell isolation from organs, immunofluorescence staining, flow cytometry, cell sorting, cell culture, and other techniques. Writes reports and summaries of findings.
2. Oversees specimen inventories.
3. Maintains lab and chemical inventories. Assists with ordering as needed.
4. Prepares data for presentation to the group and for publication.
5. Assist with training of other lab members in basic immunological procedures.

Additional details about Required Licensure/Certification: Qualifications: A Bacherlor's Degree in Immunology, Biology or related field plus two (2) Years of Professional Years of Experience is required in immunology/microbiology/molecular biology or other related fields. Knowledge of mathematical and chemical principles. Must be highly organized and efficient with their time. Must maintain professional demeanor and work well with others. Must be able to prioritize daily duties.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Work Arrangement: On-Campus: Teams that work on campus, in an office, or in a lab.
Hiring Range: $37,182 to $55,773 Annual.
