Job DescriptionThe University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Medicine is seeking a Lead, Laboratory Animal Research Specialist with a strong chemistry or biochemistry background in the laboratory of Dr. Roberto Machado. This position is responsible for carrying out specific projects under the direct supervision of Drs. Roberto Machado and Dr. Charly Lai. This position is responsible for supporting and/or ensuring design, development, documentation, and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities.
Job Summary:
The University of Maryland School of Medicine - Department of Medicine, is currently recruiting for Lead, Lab Animal Research Specialist. The Lead Specialist will lead projects and data collection across two laboratories of Dr. Machado/Dr. Schweitzer in Pulmonary and Critical Care and Dr. Lai in Cardiology on the projects in the field of pulmonary physiology and other pulmonary diseases. We are seeking an animal research surgeon with expert knowledge of rodent treatments and injections, endpoint analyses including bronchoalveolar lavage, lung inflation, echocardiograph, ultrasound, and hemodynamics. Expert knowledge of rodent anesthesia.

Primary Duties:
Performs laboratory animal support activities such as surgical, anesthesia, enrichment, diagnostics, good laboratory practice, internal-medical and biohazardous research Performs independent technical services and participates in the design of research studies. Compiles and analyzes research data and maintains detailed, accurate, and legible records for all animal procedures to comply with regulations using various relevant computer software applications.
Independently perform and troubleshoot experiments and participate in the design of research studies.
Performs general laboratory duties, such as autoclaving, preparing chemical solutions, media, reagents, and buffers as needed for animal studies.
Will prepare or assist with the preparation of manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and grant proposals.
Will present research findings at scientific meetings and symposiums.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Lead, Laboratory Animal Research Specialist:
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, or field of study related to animal science.
Experience: Three (5) years of experience including two (3) years in pulmonary physiology, sickle cell disease, pulmonary hypertension, or other pulmonary diseases a plus. Knowledge of UMB animal procedures and IACUC regulatory processes is desired.
Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.
Hiring Target: $76,500, Commensurate with education and experience
