Job Classification: Meter and Backflow Technician
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; overtime as needed
The Dedham-Westwood Water District is seeking a Meter and Backflow Technician to join the team in Dedham, MA. Reporting directly to the Customer Service Superintendent, the Meter and Backflow Technician will be responsible for making all necessary decisions to properly maintain the delivery of an adequate & safe supply of water to the distribution system and its customers. The Meter and Backflow Technician will also ensure that necessary steps are taken in emergent situations to prevent interruptions to water service as well as prevent personal and property damage.
Meter and Backflow Technician Qualifications and Skills
- High school or vocational school diploma required
- D1 Water Operator License and Backflow Device Testing Certificates a plus or willingness to obtain during first year of hire; expenses covered by DWWD
- CDL Hoisting license and plumbing skills a plus
- Strong customer service and math skills
- Strong computer skills and ability to learn new software
- Ability to safely operate light automotive trucks and/or vehicles and associated equipment
- Must have and retain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license
- Strong technical aptitude and ability to use small hand tools for mechanical/electrical activities
- Ability to wear PPE including respirators, goggles, face masks, gloves, and lab coats
- Ability to lift up to 55 lbs., bend, stand or walk in confined spaces for extended periods of time
- Flexibility to be available to address emergency calls on an overtime basis when needed

Meter and Backflow Technician Job Responsibilities
- Start/stop water service to customers
- Install meters on new service; install meter radios to obtain radio reads
- Inspect, test and report on meters and equipment; conduct field repairs as necessary
- Test and read water meters; determine reasons for unusual water usage or unsatisfactory water pressure as requested by DWWD or customer
- Take water samples for bacteriological, physical, and chemical analysis; determine chlorine residuals
- Perform work safely to prevent accidents
- Maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in an orderly and safe operating condition
- Conduct emergency work on an overtime basis when required
- Complete records/reports such as time sheets, service orders, work authorization forms, etc.
- Maintain proper inventory of material; advise Customer Service Superintendent of reorders
- Learn and maintain knowledge of the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act enforced by MA DEP
- Learn and maintain knowledge of rules and regulations approved by the Board of Water Commissioners
- Maintain neat and clean appearance for interactions with customers; ensure courteous and professional customer service
- Attend training courses as required
