POSITION SUMMARY

McKenna team-members, including Plumbing Inspectors, inspire those around them by displaying their positive individual approaches to solving difficult problems. Our Building Professionals effectively communicate expectations to McKenna team-members with whom they collaborate, as well as outside partners on our multi-firm efforts. McKenna’s Plumbing Inspectors bring with them five or more years of success in professional building services, whether municipal or private.
Our Building Professionals are a knowledgeable, reliable presence to our client communities, pairing inspectors with specific jurisdictions to create relationships between our sub-consultants, as well as the contractors, residents, and community officials that we serve.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Plumbing Inspector is committed to ensuring project success, from providing thorough, consistent, and helpful inspections, to delivering meaningful and effective plan reviews. Specifically:
- The core responsibility of McKenna’s Plumbing Inspector is to provide plan review and inspection services that maintain health and safety, are development friendly, focused on customer service, and are lean and efficient
- Work on harmonious teams with other inspectors, plan reviewers, and administrative staff
- Assist Project Directors and Project Managers in improving existing inspection and review systems
- Perform field inspections during various stages of construction
- Review plans and specifications for commercial, industrial, and residential projects to ensure compliance with city, state, and federal laws and regulations
- Perform Rental Housing inspections in accordance with municipal ordinances and regulations
- Report violations and maintain files/records
- Build relationships with current and future clients to increase awareness of McKenna and our work products
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Members of McKenna’s professional building services team are evaluated on specific performance standards, as follows:
- Ability to effectively collaborate with clients (under supervision) and other McKenna professionals
- Capability to multi-task, set priorities, and work under pressure
- Knowledge of local building codes and current construction procedures/technology
- Interpretation of codes in the field and ability to provide code compliant solutions
- Must possess the ability to positively interact with staff members, the general public, contractors, governmental entities, and other clientele
- Key measurable “vital signs” – Productivity and Client Satisfaction
Requirements
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Successful Building Professionals most often possess the following knowledge and skills:
- Must be licensed to enforce the State of Michigan Building Code, maintain registration as a code official with the Michigan Department of Labor, Bureau of Construction Codes, pursuant to Act 407, in the category of Building Inspector or Plans Examiner
- Ability to use BS&A software a plus or ability to learn the software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Effective time management, organization, and attention to detail skills
- Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment
- Ability to respectfully function as a productive and enthusiastic member of a team, under direction of McKenna’s Leadership Team, Project Directors, and Project Managers
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is a field-based position involving frequent local, in-state travel (no overnights). The role requires standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, working in confined spaces, and working in various weather conditions. Excellent manual dexterity is required to operate hand tools and other equipment. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
