The City of Oceanside is accepting applications for Senior Building Inspector. The Senior Building Inspector leads and manages the Building Inspection Team and oversees the most technical building inspections in the field to ensure conformance with established building codes. This position provides functional and technical supervision of the Building Inspection staff in the enforcement of building, mechanical, plumbing, and electric codes and regulations governing the construction process.
The Senior Building Inspector provides functional and technical supervision of the Building Inspector staff, including assigning, monitoring, and reviewing the work of the inspection team. This role trains staff in building inspection methods, procedures, and techniques, serving as a resource and providing guidance as needed. The Senior Building Inspector develops and delivers training programs, plans and schedules work assignments, and recommends staffing and equipment needs. The position performs inspections of complex commercial tenant improvements, large residential developments, and custom homes. In addition, the Senior Building Inspector research building codes, product listings, and technical manuals, maintaining up-to-date code and standards references. The role involves meeting with and advising architects, engineers, contractors, homeowners, and the public regarding building projects, responding to inquiries, and interpreting City building codes and regulations. The Senior Building Inspector also collaborates with code enforcement staff to clarify and resolve building code issues.

Ability to:

- Maintain complete and accurate records of inspections.
- Perform building inspection duties on the most complex projects under construction.
- Respond to requests, complaints and inquiries from the general public.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training
Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, including experience with complex residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects. Experience should demonstrate increasing responsibility, including lead or supervisory duties, and comprehensive knowledge of building codes, regulations, and inspection procedures.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License, Certificate:
- Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
- Possession of the following valid ICC certifications (Minimum Requirements)
- Commercial Building Inspector – B2
- Residential Building Inspector -B1
- Possession of the following valid ICC certifications (Minimum Requirements)
Physical Conditions: Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; speaking and hearing to exchange information; visual acuity to read and interpret specifications and drawings and to conduct building inspections.
Selection Process: All properly completed applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. Failure to provide all required application materials will result in disqualification from the selection process. The process may include any combination of a written exam, oral interview, and/or skills assessment to further evaluate job related qualifications. Candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be placed on an eligibility list and will remain eligible for employment consideration for a minimum of six months.
Note: Prospective employees will undergo, and must successfully pass, a background reference check (including fingerprinting) and a medical examination. Drug screening may be required.
