Job Description: SENIOR WATER PLANT OPERATOR
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Maintains and operates the district’s water system in a safe, effective, and efficient manner by operating the water treatment plants; taking samples of water, performing tests on samples, preparing reports; and maintaining facilities and grounds.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
1. Reports to: Chief Water Plant Operator.
2. Directs: Does not supervise any employees.
3. Other: Has daily contact with other employees at the water treatment plant and occasional contact with the public.
Primary Responsibilities
- Monitors charts, displays, equipment, and gauges at regular intervals, makes adjustments as needed, and records data
- Observes and inspects water flows at WTP and all plant equipment, pumps, motors, and pipelines at regular intervals
- Puts plant into service as needed, activating all necessary pumps, motors, chemical feeders, monitoring equipment, and filters
- Checks on and adjusts chemical feed rates and fills tanks
- Conducts control tests and records data at regular intervals
- Takes water samples and performs daily laboratory tests on water
- Installs, maintains and repairs plant machinery, equipment, and grounds
- Cleans water treatment equipment regularly
- Performs filter backwash process
- Assists in maintenance and repair of plant machinery and equipment
- Installs and repairs of water meters as needed
- Keeps logs and records of plant activity
- Reads customers’ water meters
- Drives vehicles to remote pump stations and water storage sites
- Cleans and maintains facilities and grounds and
- Performs such other duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of or ability to learn water treatment processes; ability to perform or learn to perform laboratory testing of water; sufficient physical skills and strength to perform job related manual tasks; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to work without direct supervision; ability to attend and understand technical courses; ability to assume responsibility for complete operation of treatment plant; and ability to detect and repair problems in equipment operation; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; understanding SCADA and GIS systems; knowledge in use of Microsoft 365 products, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- High school diploma or its equivalent and (2) years’ experience in surface water treatment and operations; or
Any equivalent combination and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
- Licensure: Must possess a valid TCEQ Class C Surface Water License or higher.
- Driver License: Must possess a valid Class C Driver License with a clean driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIROMENT
- Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds occasionally; pushing a minimum force of 50 pounds. Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope.
- Working conditions can be outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; water; mechanical, electrical, chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; deep excavations; and animals, snakes and poisonous insects. Must use personal protective equipment.
COMPENSATION
- Salary is Dependent on qualifications and experience (DOQ). In accordance with established pay scale.
- Hourly plus full benefits package included.
