What Your Job Will Be Like
Are you passionate about your experience working in facilities and dream of using your knowledge and experience in Fire Protection Engineering? If so, you could be the Facilities Technologist we are seeking to join our team as the subject matter authority for inspection, testing and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems (i.e., fire sprinklers, special fire suppression, fire extinguishers, fire alarm)!
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Develop inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements for fire sprinkler systems and oversees implementation for continuous improvement (e.g., trending and analysis).
- Develop training requirements for individuals performing inspection, testing and maintenance tasks of fire sprinkler systems.
- Develop acceptance testing procedures and coordinate implementation.
- Assist engineering in review and approval of architectural and fire sprinkler system drawings, engineering calculations (e.g., hydraulic, battery, voltage drop), and other design documents for new construction or modification of existing facilities.
- Develop and implement fire prevention programs and procedures in an attempt to eliminate personnel injury and minimize property damage due to fire and explosion.
- Perform facility and life-safety evaluations to determine fire risk and provide effective and efficient engineered solutions to meet applicable building and fire codes, regulations, and standards to mitigate risk.
- Review and approve impairment requests (e.g., fire alarm, fire sprinkler, fire suppression systems).
- Support fire protection engineers to ensure facility fire and life safety is appropriately addressed in work planning and controls.
- Develop appropriate equivalency and exemption requests.
- Perform regular field inspections of newly installed or modified Fire Sprinkler systems prior to acceptance.
- Apply research to the design, development, construction, installation, and decommissioning of electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, and architectural elements.
This position requires the willingness to travel in support of work assignments; this position resides in Albuquerque, NM but could also provide support to other Sandia National Laboratory sites (e.g., California, Hawaii, and Nevada), as needed.
The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a NICET certification(s).
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 50% of the time.
Salary Range
$63,800 - $123,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- High School diploma plus three (3) or more years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
- Experience with inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection/ fire alarm systems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-Level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire
- NICET certification(s) or ability to obtain.
- Working knowledge of MS Office software applications.
- Experience using relevant software such as Maximo, ProjectWise, CIS, etc.
- Understanding of applicable federal laws, regulations, building and fire codes, executive orders, and DOE orders related to fire protection and highly protected risk concepts.
- Working knowledge of the intent as well as the independent and interdependent relationship between applicable building codes, fire codes, and national consensus codes and standards.
- Experience using and interpreting the IBC and its referenced codes and standards (e.g., NFPA) applicable to a diverse set of operations that include hazardous, industrial, business, assembly, and storage occupancies.
- Knowledge of the NFPA requirements associated with inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems.
- Demonstrated experience working with architects, engineers, developers, contractors and building owners in the interpretation and compliance with adopted building and fire codes, regulations and standards.
- Comprehensive knowledge of and experience with planning and completing projects.
- Analytical, reasoning, and communication skills necessary to identify and resolve fire risk problems with the mission in mind and assist in making recommendations in oral and written form.
- Ability to specify suppression system solutions for unique hazards.
- Understanding of engineering calculations.
About Our Team
The Building & Fire Safety Department provides for protection of workers, the public, the environment, and property from fire and its related hazards.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
