Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Leads the maintenance of the golf course.
- Leads the repair of golf course maintenance equipment
- Rendering professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the facility's Director of Golf and Parks Superintendent
- Reports to: Director of Parks and Recreation/Golf Course (in his absence, report to Parks Superintendent).
In all instances, the golf course superintendent coordinates operations with the Director of Parks and Recreation/GC AND the Parks Superintendent.
- Directs: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent; indirectly supervises and determines priorities of maintenance crew members.
- Other: Has daily contact with other departmental employees, vendors, and the general public.
- Play on the Golf Course will be determined by the Golf Course Superintendent after consulting with the Golf Course Director as to the condition of the Golf Course.
Manages and supervises departmental personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, and making recommendations on hiring, firing, and disciplining;
Supervises maintenance crew in maintaining the golf course in a neat manner, including mowing and watering the grass and spraying pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides; assist, if need be;
Oversees and performs required maintenance and repairs on course, including repairing the irrigation system and performing electrical, mechanical, welding, and plumbing repairs;
Assists in developing and implementing construction and improvement projects;
Supervises the maintenance of the course, including inspecting the grounds, and coordinating necessary repairs;
Operates heavy and light equipment in the maintenance and repair of the golf course, including fairway mowing tractor, rough mower, reel sharpener, and pesticide spray unit;
Maintains timesheets and leave records of departmental employees and prepares required reports; and
Orders materials and equipment as needed.
Other Important Duties *
Acts as 24-hour supervisor of the golf course and is on call for any problems 24 hours a day;
Turns on irrigation system when necessary due to lack of rain and provides on-site supervision;
Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS
The golf course superintendent assumes responsibility for managing and maintaining golf course properties, which may include:
- The golf course
- Maintenance Equipment (Barn)
- Clubhouse grounds and landscaping
- Open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage
- Tournament Room
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Prepares the annual budget for the maintenance and capital improvement of course properties. The superintendent formulates the annual maintenance and capital budgets to implement the long-range plan and defined maintenance standards, as well as Parks and Recreation policies
- Interviews, hires, trains and supervises a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining the properties. The superintendent has the authority to terminate employment of subordinates.
- Plans all maintenance and project work, applying his/her agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon maintenance standards and long-rang goals.
- Oversee the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish the work. The superintendent frequently inspects the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs.
- The superintendent is responsible for inventory control and oversees the equipment maintenance programs. The superintendent approves all expenditures and exercises cost control measures to keep, as nearly as possible., operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budgets.
- Keeps accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc.
- Communicates regularly with other supervisors/foremen to discuss activities, goals, plans and member/customer input.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: golf course management and maintenance; agronomy techniques and principles; safe application and use of chemical pesticides; and supervisory techniques.
Skill/Ability to: operate light and heavy equipment in the maintenance of the golf course; supervise and motivate employees; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; perform electric, plumbing, and welding repairs; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, and the general public; and maintain appropriate necessary certifications, Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, and good driving record.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
- Advance knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods; and a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the golf game.
- A high degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision making.
- Proficiency in computer use, knowledge of Microsoft Office and other applications.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations (including, but not limited to, employment, safety and environmental standards, laws and regulations).
- Participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field day and trade shows.
- May require current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE/ CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
Bachelors degree in agriculture, agronomy, or a related field, plus at least two years of experience in golf course operations, including supervisory experience;
or high school diploma, or its equivalent, plus at least six years of experience in the management of golf course maintenance, including supervisory experience;
or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
EDUCATION REQUIRED
Education/Experience: 2-4 Turfgrass management required, bachelor's degree with a focus on turfgrass/agronomy and 5 years' experience as a superintendent.
*Noncommercial pesticide applicator's license from the Texas Department of Agriculture
- Proven history of providing exceptional golfing conditions and managing all aspects of the golf course and landscape at the highest level.
- Successful experience managing Tifeagle USGA spec greens.
- Understanding all pest control techniques.
- Solid irrigation management philosophy and practices.
- Strong agronomic skills stay current with advances in turf technology and equipment.
- Possesses leadership qualities that have resulted in high employee satisfaction -proven staff retention, low turnover.
- Experience developing standard operating procedures and training programs to onboard new staff.
- Experience mentoring team members.
- Proven success in developing superintendents/assistants to promotion.
- Excellent communication skills-listens to and responds to both direct members and team members.
- Strong budget management and forecasting skills.

- Valid Driver's License;
- High school graduation, or its equivalent, plus at least two years of experience repairing
and/or maintaining small mechanical and/or electrical motors; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of: golf course management and maintenance; agronomy techniques and principles; safe application and use of chemical pesticides; and supervisory techniques.
