The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (CTDOT), is now accepting applications for an exciting Transportation Supervising Engineer (Engineering) opportunity in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Division of Bridges, Bridge Safety and Evaluation unit!
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
- Monday - Friday
- Full-time (40 hours per week)
- First shift
- Location: CTDOT Headquarters in Newington, CT
- Hybrid (in-office/telework) may be available
THE ROLE
Engineers in the Bridge Safety and Evaluation unit ensure the safety of the traveling public by managing, directing, and coordinating the inspection of structures, including but not limited to, highway, pedestrian, and railroad bridges, overhead sign supports, and traffic signal mast arm supports.

REQUIREMENTS
- This position requires active Professional Engineer (PE) licensure from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors consistent with C.G.S.§20-302.
- Applicants must be available to travel to and attend trainings, conferences, public meetings, field reviews, emergency responses, etc., both within and outside of normal working hours, when necessary. A valid driver’s license is required and must be maintained.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in inspection of highway, rail and ancillary structures
- Successful completion of the two-week FHWA bridge inspection training course (NHI No. 130055)
- Successful completion of a total of 18 hours of inspection refresher training (such as NHI course No. 130053) following completion of the two-week course
- Experience supervising, evaluating, and mentoring lower-level engineers
- Experience managing consultant engineers
- Experience managing project schedules and budgets
- Experience with innovative techniques used to analyze structure condition
- Experience with state and federal funding programs
- Experience coordinating effectively with other Department units, consultants, towns, state and federal agencies
- Experience with relevant federal, state, agency and bureau manuals, policies, and procedures
- Experience using Office365, Compass, AssetWise, and other discipline-related applications
- Experience in bridge management
- Experience analyzing bridge and structural design problems and recommending effective solutions
- Experience with presentation skills and oral and written communication skills
- Experience analyzing problems and recommending effective solutions for engineering related issues
- Experience preparing and reviewing complex technical reports and documents
- Experience working independently, being self-motivated, and taking ownership of assignments
- Possession of an accredited bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in engineering in a position-relevant area such as Civil Engineering with structural emphasis

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Eight (8) years of experience in transportation engineering.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been as an engineer with lead responsibility for complex transportation engineering projects in bridge design, drainage, electrical, foundations, traffic, facilities design, highway design, research, utilities or hydraulics.
NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Engineer 3 (Engineering).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents must possess Professional Engineer (PE) licensure from the Department of Consumer Protection State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors consistent with C.G.S.§20-302.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
