Description
The Village of Onsted is seeking a dedicated and technically minded Wastewater Manager to oversee the operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of our wastewater treatment facilities. This is a critical leadership role ensuring the safety of our community’s water resources and the protection of the local environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Oversight: Manage the daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant and collection system to ensure continuous efficient service.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all operations meet or exceed Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and EPA standards.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Oversee the preventative maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, SCADA systems, and other critical infrastructure.
- Testing and Analysis: Direct laboratory testing, sample collection, and data analysis to monitor treatment effectiveness and report results to state agencies.
- Budget and Planning: assist the DPW Superintendent in developing annual budgets, capital improvement plans, and equipment procurement.
- Emergency Response: Serve as a primary point of contact for system failures or environmental emergencies, coordinating with the DPW team as needed.
Reporting Structure:
The Wastewater Manager is a key member of the Department of Public Works. This position reports directly to the DPW Superintendent but must be able to work closely with the Village Clerk, Village Treasurer and Village President should the occasion arise, collaborating closely on village-wide infrastructure projects and resource allocation.

The Village of Onsted is working for the highest efficient of operations. As such, this role is specifically designed for an individual who is highly self-motivated and self-sufficient. While you will report to the DPW Superintendent for high-level strategy and budgeting, you will be expected to manage the daily technical operations, identify system needs, and troubleshoot mechanical issues independently. We are looking for a leader who takes initiative without needing constant supervision.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License (CDL preferred or must be able to obtain.)
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of biological/chemical treatment processes.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks, including lifting 70 lbs.
Certification and Training Requirements:
The Village of Onsted prefers candidates who already hold a Michigan EGLE Wastewater Certification (Class D or higher.) However, we encourage motivated individuals who do not currently hold these certifications to apply.
If the selected candidate is not yet certified, the following in-depth training path is required:
Entry-Level Phase (First 6-12 Months)
Operational Hours: Candidates must begin accumulating the mandatory 2,000+ hours of hands-on operational experience required by the State of Michigan to sit for the Class D exam.
Foundational Courses: Completion of EGLE-approved courses in:
-Basic Wastewater Treatment Understanding the “Headworks” to “discharge” flow
-Wastewater Math: Mastery of volume, flow rate, and chemical dosage calculations.
The Certification Path (Class D/C)
State Examinations: Within a timeframe agreed upon at employment, the manager must successfully pass the EGLE Class D certification exam.
Advanced Training: Following initial certifications, the manager will be expected to attend specialized workshops through the Michigan Water Environment
Association (MWEA) or Michigan Rural Water Association (MRWA) in:
-Laboratory Procedures: Proper sampling and testing for BOD, TSS, and Phosphorus
-Safety and MIOSHA: Confined space entry, lockout/tagout, and hazardous material handling.
Continuing Education: To maintain licensure, the manager must earn CEC (Continuing Education Credits) every three-year cycle. The Village provides support for attending industry conferences and technical seminars to meet these requirements.
