- Water Plant Operator
Description
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in operating wells, high service pumps, motors, chemical feed pumps, and support equipment necessary for proper maintenance and operations of the City water system.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Operates and maintains the equipment of the water system including pump station turbines, chemical pumps/feed equipment, electrical control panels, lights, motors, float switches, oilators, high capacity centrifugal water pumps, fuel pumps, gauges, and chemical scales.
2. Checks all motors for oil, grease in bearing, overheating, malfunctions, and other problems.
3. Cleans, paints, maintains, and is responsible for all minor repairs on water system equipment, pump stations, and well houses as needed.
4. Makes major repairs when possible; may request outside service when appropriate.
5. Maintains and controls water pressure throughout the City.
6. Operates plant boosters and maintains proper dosage of chemicals.
7. Observes and adjusts chemical dosage levels, keeps chlorine cylinders changed, checks on chlorine, fluoride, phosphate levels; adds chemical when needed and maintain dosages.
8. Checks feed rate, takes water samples and checks for chemical and bacterial quality.
9. Takes and logs meter reading on equipment, keeps records on chemical supply and disposition, keeps well charts, well performance levels, monthly and daily pumpage reports, reads and records reservoir gauges for daily reports.
10. Keeps work logs, checks appearance of buildings for cleanliness, heat-control and other conditions.
11. Safely operates assigned City vehicles
12. May participate in snow removal operations of City streets, crosswalks, and parking lots including spreading salt and sand as required.
13. Responsible for job daily assignments including completing all required work orders, performing general labor, and insuring that assigned job site has been cleaned and left without safety hazards.
14. Responsible for the daily maintenance of assigned City vehicle, including checking and maintaining
fluid levels, checking vehicle safety features, and washing and cleaning interiors and exteriors.
15. Maintains tools and equipment in good working order.
16. Observes basic safety practices.
17. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of basic chemistry, mathematics, mechanics, electricity, and of water treatment methods. Skill in performing mechanical operations, in reading charts, meters, and gauges, in comprehending, defining, and solving problems, and in making basic decision on use of equipment. Knowledge of MS Office Suite or other word processing, spreadsheet and data base software.
Requirements
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED. Completion of four (4) high school level courses in chemistry and or mathematics and six (6) months experience in operating and maintaining mechanical equipment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work involves frequent walking, standing, and driving; as well as lifting and carrying of moderate objects (up to 50 pounds) and exposure to hazardous chemicals and high voltage. Work is conducted both inside and outside and may involve regular exposure to adverse conditions and exposure to the rough and uneven terrain. Work involves climbing to heights of 130 feet or more.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Obtain Class “C” Illinois Water Supply Operator’s Certificate within 18 months of hire.
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class B Illinois Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire.
Ability to work courteously with the general public.
