- Water Treatment Plant Operator
Description
The Water Treatment Plant Operator under general supervision, performs a variety of duties in the treatment and production of the public water supply; repairs and maintains water plant equipment ensuring optimum operating efficiency.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have at least a high school diploma or GED
Associates Degree in Science is preferred, but not required
Two years mechanical and/or electrical maintenance and repair experience
Working knowledge in the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery utilized in public water supply systems
Working knowledge of applicable safety procedures and precautions
Working knowledge of plumbing and electrical repairs pertaining to the maintenance of public water systems
Basic knowledge of computers and data entry
Valid Illinois driver’s license
REQUIREMENTS
Willingness to work 12 hour shifts and weekends as needed
Ability to detect health and safety hazards and institute appropriate corrective procedures
Perform the operation, maintenance and repair of all pertinent machinery, equipment and tools
Perform accurate adjustments to equipment used in the water supply system
Inspect machinery and equipment for the detection of flaws and defects in operations and recommend appropriate remedial action
Perform basic laboratory tests
Use and apply basic mathematics
Respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day and on weekends
Physical fitness, mechanical aptitude, and dexterity
Ability to work independently and/or as a team
Ability to work during inclement weather conditions and perform manual labor
Establish and maintain a satisfactory working relationship with co-workers and the general public
Must live within 20 miles of Village of Rantoul city limits within 6 months of completion of probationary period
RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs daily visual inspection of water treatment machinery, equipment, control panels, and chemical feeders; takes electrical, chemical and chart readings throughout the plant; adjusts control pressure and flow of water to the distribution system; replenishes fluoride, chlorine, lime, phosphate and alum supplies
Services water treatment equipment and machinery including changing oil in motors, pumps, generators, and engines, greasing motors and pumps, and cleaning filters, floats, and chemical feeders; back washes filters when needed; routinely exercises pumps
Repairs pumps, motors, air compressors, and other equipment when possible; replaces seals and bearings; checks for electrical problems; removes motors and pumps when outside servicing is required
Collects water samples and performs alkalinity, pH, hardness, chlorine, phosphate and fluoride tests; records test results; determines the cause of unusual results and repairs mechanical malfunctions and/or adjusts the rate of chemical feedings
Maintains daily log of water plant operations; reads and records amounts of water pumped and chemicals added to the system; submits all operational data to the Chief of Operations
Hauls lime sludge from the water treatment plant and deposits sludge in designated farm fields or in the lagoons at the wastewater treatment facility; performs routine maintenance and repair of the truck used for sludge hauling
