The RSB is seeking a senior science policy officer to advise and deliver a portfolio of activities focusing on plant and natural environmental sciences, including organisational sustainability actions for the RSB. 

The work will include being well-informed about bioscience-relevant policy developments in the sphere of plant sciences and natural environmental sciences, including issues relevant to climate change and biodiversity loss, ethical biological innovation (including the use of genetic knowledge), food security and biological security nationally and, where possible, internationally.

The successful candidate will have an excellent knowledge of science and the science community, an understanding of the broad UK policy environment, and particular knowledge, experience, interests and skills relevant to plant and environmental sciences. 

Job description

Purpose

  • To support the policy activities of the Society with a remit covering plant and natural environmental sciences, including organisational sustainability actions for the Society.
  • To assist the Head of Science Policy, working as part of the Science Policy Team

Main Responsibilities 

The Senior Science Policy Officer for Plant and Environmental Sciences will:

  • Act proactively to remain well-informed about bioscience-relevant policy developments in the sphere of plant sciences and natural environmental sciences. This includes issues relevant to climate change and biodiversity loss, ethical biological innovation (including the use of genetic knowledge), food security and biological security nationally and, where possible, internationally.
  • Provide specialist input and delivery of a portfolio of activities with focus on policy for the biosciences, and biosciences advice to policy on plant and environmental issues, as defined by the science policy strategic priorities framework:
  • Facilitate, support and advise cross-team delivery, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the Society's strategic objectives within the business plan, related to development and maintenance of our commitments to climate and nature in terms of our operational activity as an organisation, including accounting for and improving carbon and nature footprints of the Society.
  • Provide policy advice and secretariat support to the Natural Capital Initiative and specific activities as agreed.
  • Provide policy advice and secretariat support to the Society's Plant Science Group (PSG), taking responsibility for delivery of specific activities as agreed, including the Plant Health Undergraduate Studentships Programme (PHUGS), and the monthly Plant Science Newsletter. Additionally, provide policy advice to the RSB's Plant Health Advisory Group.
  • Lead the development and delivery, and assist the communication, of proactive and reactive Society policy messaging where relevant to the remit of the role. This will include researching and writing reports, articles, responses, briefings, events and position statements. These will be produced through consultation with staff colleagues, volunteers, and other members and Member Organisations to: organise meetings; convene and synthesise community expertise; research and analyse existing policy; and contribute to the policy pages of The Biologist, policy newsletters, the Society's website, and social media channels.
  • Represent the Society in meeting and collaborating with external organisations where relevant to the remit of the role.
  • Provide assistance with other Society activity from time to time as reasonably requested.
  • Contribute towards continuous improvement within the Society and commit to personal development.

This job description is flexible. The duties of the post holder will be reviewed periodically and may be altered to reflect the needs of the organisation.

Person Specification

Education - Essential
  • A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) 
Education - Desirable
  • A postgraduate qualification.
  • Education, qualifications or experience in the biosciences and related subjects.
Knowledge/skills/abilities - Essential
  • Excellent general knowledge of science and the science community, and understanding of the broad UK policy environment. This should include particular knowledge, experience, interests and skills relevant to plant and environmental sciences. Able to consider a range of viewpoints and to develop and communicate the Society's agreed position on these.
  • Commitment to supporting and communicating the importance of the biological sciences, with a passion for promoting excellence in biology and supporting bioscience professionals. Willingness to engage in the full range of subjects related to biology.
  • Adaptable and determined, with a positive and proactive attitude and a capacity to think creatively and act pragmatically. Comfortable to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent project management and organisational skills, able to manage several tasks simultaneously by planning clearly and effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Good judgement and problem solving skills, ability to make operational decisions using knowledge and experience.
  • Highly literate and numerate, with attention to detail and accuracy. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to gather, and analyse, evidence to make proposals and decisions, and to defend them with diplomacy.
  • IT proficient, including sound working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues with care and to guarantee confidentiality when required.
  • Commitment to personal development and credibility, with a capacity to recognise personal strengths and weaknesses, and welcoming of constructive criticism.

  • Have an understanding or experience of biology policy in a national and international context.
