Company History

Snap-on was founded in 1920 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Joseph Johnson and William Seidemann, based on an innovative idea of interchangeable socket wrenches that allowed mechanics to do more work with fewer tools. Five unique handles and ten sockets that snapped on interchangeably, coined “Five do the work of Fifty,” launched a company that would shape an industry.

The company grew quickly by demonstrating its products directly to customers and developing a mobile sales model, which later evolved into its well-known franchise van distribution network.

Over the decades, Snap-on expanded beyond hand tools into diagnostics, equipment, and industrial solutions, becoming a global leader serving automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing industries, with headquarters in Kenosha, Wisconsin
