As the Assistant Director of Human Resources for Student Affairs at University of Pittsburgh this role is pivotal in supporting our mission to foster a vibrant and inclusive student and staff community. This position will report to the Director of Human Resources. A key component of this role will be to develop and implement HR strategies aligned with the goals of Student Affairs and in alignment with University policies, procedures and all applicable laws. This position will oversee all aspects of the HR function within Student Affairs, including recruitment, facilitating onboarding, training, performance management, employee relations, roster management, leaves of absence, and salary increase process. As strategic leader on the Student Affairs HR team, the Assistant Director will serve as the driving force behind HR projects and initiatives, both routine and those designed to fill identified needs. This position will serve as the primary responsible party in ensuring compliance with Collective Bargaining Agreement(s) while fostering productive labor relations - including grievance handling, adherence to CBA terms, and maintaining positive employee relations in a unionized environment. As a representative of the employer, it is vital that this role maintains confidentiality and discretion as they have access to confidential and sensitive information to labor relation matters both for union and non-unionized employees. Collaborate closely with department heads and directors to provide strategic HR guidance and manage the Employee and Labor concerns and processes. This role will be a key contributor to the development and execution of the Division of Student Affairs' strategic plan and developing the Division's policies and procedures related to HR, including conducting regular assessments of HR policies and procedures to ensure they meet the evolving needs of our diverse workforce. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization. Proven track record of developing and implementing HR initiatives that support organizational objectives. Strong knowledge of PittWorx, Talent Center, payroll registers, and other University platforms is preferred. The successful candidate will lead the development and implementation of comprehensive HR programs, including 360-degree performance reviews, structured onboarding and recruiting processes for the division, and employee recognition and engagement initiatives.
Job Summary
Leads team and assists in planning and developing initiatives and strategies that support personnel management, recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement and retention, and customer service excellence. Leads the implementation of policies, processes, and strategic practices and ensures adherence to regulations and standards. Consults the director and/or senior leadership on sensitive and complex matters. Oversees budgets and performs associated financial duties. Facilitates organizational and career development programs and implements training, wellbeing & inclusion initiatives, and diversity excellence initiatives.
Essential Functions
- Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive 360-degree performance review process, ensuring alignment with divisional goals, employee development, and organizational effectiveness.
- Develop and manage a comprehensive onboarding program that supports new employees from pre-hire through their first year, enhancing engagement and retention.
- Assist in the development and implementation of a standardized recruitment and hiring process for the Division of Student Affairs, promoting consistency, equity, and alignment with university policies and best practices while enhancing the overall candidate and hiring manager experience.
- Oversee and enhance employee recognition and engagement initiatives, including formal recognition programs, milestone celebrations, and strategies.
- Supervises staff, including hiring, distributing and reviewing work, performance reviews, and documenting disciplinary actions and other human resource administration.Manages work schedules and approves timecards.

- Facilitates the planning and developing of initiatives and strategies that support personnel management, employee engagement, and customer service excellence.
- Sets direction for recruitment, onboarding, retention, and succession strategies.
- Oversees the implementation of HR policies, processes, and strategic practices to maximize human capital development; has working knowledge of federal, state, and local legislation regarding labor standards, including Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
- Consults director, senior leadership and institutional management on sensitive and complex matters. Provides insight into a variety of issues that involve applying or adapting new theories, concepts, principles, methods, or practices.
- Advises on and coordinates organizational and career development programs and establishes and provides training initiatives.
- Develops and implements diversity and inclusive wellbeing & inclusion excellence initiatives in support of employees.

Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary. May be required to move objects up to 25 pounds occasionally.

Hiring Range: $68,809 - $75,689
