Description
Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club is seeking a motivated and experienced Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join its agronomy leadership team on Hilton Head Island. Port Royal features 36 holes of championship golf across two distinctive courses: Barony, designed by George W. Cobb, and Robber's Row, originally designed by Cobb and Willard C. Byrd and later redesigned by Pete Dye. The Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to implement maintenance programs, supervise and develop the agronomy team, and provide outstanding playing conditions for Members and guests.

Position Summary
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will assist with the daily management and maintenance of the golf courses, practice facilities, clubhouse grounds, landscaping, and related property. This position plays an important role in implementing the Superintendent's agronomic vision, directing team members, coordinating daily work assignments, and ensuring that all work is completed safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with the implementation of all golf course maintenance and agronomic programs.
- Schedule, train, supervise, and evaluate members of the golf course maintenance team.
- Assign and monitor daily work to ensure efficient use of labor, equipment, and materials.
- Inspect both golf courses regularly to evaluate playing conditions and identify maintenance needs.
- Supervise and participate in mowing, planting, fertilizing, irrigation, cultivation, and general turf care.
- Oversee fertilizer and plant-protectant applications in compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Monitor irrigation systems and pump stations and coordinate necessary repairs to pipes, valves, heads, and other components.
- Maintain accurate records related to maintenance activities, chemical applications, employee training, and safety.
- Help maintain clean, safe, and organized maintenance facilities, including chemical, irrigation, equipment, and parts storage areas.
- Assist with short- and long-range agronomic planning, budgeting, and capital improvement projects.
- Implement safety programs and provide ongoing employee training on equipment operation and the proper handling of fertilizers, herbicides, and other materials.
- Coordinate course maintenance activities with the golf operation to minimize disruption to play.
- Assist with the management of outside contractors and special projects.
- Communicate professionally with team members, club leadership, Members, and guests.
- Assume responsibility for the golf course maintenance operation in the Superintendent's absence.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent or General Manager.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in turfgrass management or a related field preferred; bachelor's degree in agronomy, horticulture, plant science, or a related discipline is a plus.
- Previous golf course maintenance experience, preferably in an Assistant Superintendent or supervisory role.
- Experience managing warm-season turfgrass in a coastal environment is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, irrigation systems, fertilizers, plant protectants, and equipment operation.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead by example and work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations affecting golf course maintenance operations.
- South Carolina pesticide applicator license preferred or the ability to obtain one within a designated timeframe.
- GCSAA membership or involvement in a local superintendent association is encouraged.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Basic understanding of the rules and traditions of golf preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and direct sunlight.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, pulling, and repetitive movement.
- Ability to safely operate golf course maintenance vehicles and equipment.
- Availability to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, and additional hours as course conditions require.
