The City of Newport News is hiring a Building Codes Inspector with a mechanical focus to inspect residential and commercial buildings for compliance with the Virginia Construction Code (USBC) and local ordinances. If you've built your career in the mechanical/HVAC trade and you're ready to step off the tools into a stable, respected role with the City — we'll support you in earning your state inspector certifications after you're hired.
Target Salary Range: $51,500.00 - $63,289.35 Based on Experience
You don't need to be a certified inspector to start If you have journey-level mechanical experience, we'll help you certify on the job:
Obtain your DHCD Inspector 1 & 2 Family (Residential) certification within 18 months of hire
Obtain your DHCD Inspector General (Commercial) certification within 30 months of hire
The City supports you through the process — your trade experience is the foundation
What you'll do
- Inspect residential dwellings and commercial buildings for code compliance, with an emphasis on mechanical systems — HVAC, equipment installation, materials, and proper procedures — alongside plumbing, electrical, and structural work
- Review building and renovation plans, blueprints, and specifications for mechanical and overall code compliance
- Advise property owners, contractors, and builders on code standards and resolve concerns
- Coordinate with contractors and utility companies when work may interrupt community services
- Inspect new and existing elevators
- Issue violation notices, warnings, and court summonses; testify in court when needed
- Document inspections through daily reports, incident reports, and logs

Please note: This position requires a background check, a satisfactory medical evaluation, designation as Conservator of the Peace, and a valid driver's license. Some inspection work involves climbing, confined spaces, heights, and exposure to construction-site conditions.

Requirements
What you bring
- High school diploma and 3–5 years of journey-level experience in a building trade — mechanical/HVAC preferred — or elevator maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Master certification in a building trade is preferred
- Knowledge of the mechanical trade: methods, materials, equipment, and the ability to read plans and technical schematics
- A valid driver's license with an acceptable record
- Designation as Conservator of the Peace (required for the role)
