Class Summary
Performs field and office work along with inspections of residential and commercial construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable building and construction codes. Work is performed under close supervision while developing knowledge of inspection practices, codes, and regulations.

Essential Functions
1.Inspects residential and commercial buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling too serve compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Building Inspector Senior - Inspects more complex industrial, commercial, and residential buildings, including fire protection systems to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations during various stages of construction and remodeling.
2.Identifies and document visible defects or code violations and communicates findings to Building Inspection Supervisors.
3.Reviews plans and specifications to ensure compliance with building codes and construction requirements.
4.Documents inspections, maintains inspection records and prepares basic reports.
5.Provides general information to customers, contractors, and the public regarding inspection processes, scheduling, and basic code requirements.
6.Accompanies senior inspectors and supervisors in the field to gain knowledge of inspection procedures, methods, and safety practices.
7.Coordinates inspection activities with other City departments and divisions; confers with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office.
8.Supports investigations of possible code violations and unpermitted construction activities under direction of supervisory staff. Building Inspector Senior - Performs structure damage assessment reports to determine the extent of damage in order to obtain abuilding permit; performs investigations on illegal construction of buildings and additions to ensure City and building codes are met to be code compliant and permitted.
9.Updates training in LEAF to meet the minimum ISO annual training requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

2.Basic understanding of building codes and ordinances, or ability to learn and apply them.
3.Ability to learn inspection practices, procedures, and documentation requirements.
4.Ability to read and interpret basic plans, blueprints, and diagrams with guidance.
5.Basic math skills and ability to prepare simple written reports.
6.Ability to operate a personal computer and standard office software.
7.Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively.
8.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
9.Willingness to learn safety practices and follow established procedures in field environments.
10.Operate a motor vehicle and abide by traffic laws and rules.

Supervision
Work is performed under close supervision of a Building Inspection Supervisor. This position does not supervise others.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications (Building Inspector)
High School Diploma or GED and some coursework or technical training in construction, building inspection, or a related field; and two (2) years of construction-related experience including one (1) year of building inspection experience; and at least one (1) ICC certification within six (6) months of hire or promotion; and a Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and ability.
Minimum Qualifications (Building Inspector Senior)
A High School Diploma or GED and additional technical training; and three (3) years of experience in building inspection or three (3) years of construction work in one of the four major trades: Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical or Building Construction or a related field and a minimum of one (1) year of building inspection experience; and two (2) ICC Inspector Certifications upon hire or promotion; and a valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Physical Demands & Work Environment With or Without Reasonable Accommodation
The primary duties of this class are performed in a general office environment and outdoors and may include exposure to adverse weather conditions. This position requires:
Sufficient clarity of hearing which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate with others;
Sufficient visual acuity which permits the employee to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, comprehend written work instructions, technical documents, blueprints and diagrams and move through unfamiliar buildings and across rough terrain;
Sufficient manual dexterity which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment and to make adjustments to equipment;
Sufficient body mobility, flexibility and balance to perform field inspections that require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching and other physical exertions climbing ladders and scaffolding 40 feet or higher on buildings roofs and towers;
Sufficient ability to endure prolonged exposure to arid desert conditions (i.e., prolonged sun and heat exposure during summer months).
