Description
Under the supervision of the Community Development Director, conducts onsite inspections of building projects throughout the City to ensure full compliance with state building codes for new construction, additions, and alterations; Ensures that construction is in conformance with approved plans and specifications; Inspects rental units within the City to help ensure minimal health and safety standards; and assists contractors and the general public with information regarding construction and code related matters. Inspects and enforces the City’s zoning ordinance as directed by their supervisor. Prepares inspection reports, issues warnings, and violations, appears in court and testifies in court as an expert witness.
- Inspects materials and construction to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes, including footings, insulation, drywall, compaction, backfill, and other related aspects of construction.
- Inspect all rental units within the city to ensure compliance with minimum health and safety standards in accordance with applicable codes and City policies.
- Promotes voluntary compliance when standards are not met by advising on necessary corrections, issuing violation notices as needed, and conducting re-inspections to verify that corrective actions have been completed.
- Approves on-site conditions for the issuance of temporary and permanent certificates of occupancy.
- Responds to inquiries from property owners, contractors, architects, local government units, and others regarding code and ordinance interpretation, department policies and procedures, violations, complaints, and general information.
- Provides information and guidance to property owners, contractors, developers, engineers, and architects regarding building code requirements and construction procedures.
- Oversee and participates in the organization and maintenance of records, files, legal documents, and other information related to building and housing operations.
- Collaborate closely with the Community Development Director, Police and Fire, Zoning Administrator, and other stakeholders to maintain health and safety standards for all structures within the city.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; advanced technical trade coursework, or an associates degree
- Licensed as a Building Inspector and Plan Reviewer in accordance with Public Act 407 or 2016
- Licensed building contractor eligible for registration with the State of Michigan as a Building Inspector and Plan
- Reviewer under the State Construction Code Act (Public Act 407 of 2016)
- If not currently licensed, applicant must be licensed within 30 days of employment
