Working as the Chief Engineering Inspector, you can expect to oversee and coordinate inspections of Town construction projects and private developments to ensure they meet all standards for quality, safety, and compliance. You’ll supervise, plan, and schedule the work of the inspection team; conduct performance evaluations; and make recommendations regarding hiring, promotions, and other personnel actions. Regular meetings with inspectors will allow you to review progress, address challenges, and maintain consistency in inspection practices. In this role, you’ll travel throughout the Town to inspect projects firsthand, assist inspectors with complex situations, and verify that materials, workmanship, and construction practices meet approved plans and legal requirements. You’ll also compile specifications for Town construction project bids, perform final inspections on new subdivisions and public improvements, and provide recommendations for acceptance or rejection. Additionally, you’ll inspect construction materials and equipment—which may require lifting or entering confined spaces such as sewer and drainpipes—and work closely with contractors to ensure compliance with Town specifications, taking corrective actions when necessary.

Minimum Requirements
Here is what you must have to be considered for the position of Chief Engineering Inspector:
- Associate’s Degree with major course work in building construction, engineering or a closely related field
- Supplemented by six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the construction industry at least five (5) of which must have been as a construction inspector, engineer, architect, foreman or superintendent; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license
