Description
The purpose of this position is to perform on-site inspections of structures and properties to ensure compliance with applicable local and state codes and ordinances related to property maintenance and housing quality standards. Duties and responsibilities include performing inspections, preparing records and reports, conducting research, and providing excellent customer service. Performs on-site inspections of existing structures and properties in the city limits to ensure compliance with applicable local and state codes and ordinances to ensure public safety, with primary emphasis on violations pertaining to unsafe/unsightly structures, housing quality, sanitation, and property maintenance. Prepares and maintains reports and records of all inspections, and prepares citations, correspondence concerning codes, and other violations for appropriate distribution. Performs research of past and present complaints, actions, violations, building permits, property deeds, property tax, and participates in creating and revising local ordinances as needed. Utilizes the City’s citizen assistance/complaint system to respond to complaints and requests for service within the position’s area of purview. Communicates with the Code Compliance Division Manager on the status of inspections, re-inspections, investigations, code interpretations, and other matters related to Property Maintenance Code and “nuisance code” enforcement as required. Attends training courses and takes exams as required to stay current with changing state codes and to maintain or to advance level of ICC International Property Maintenance Code certification. Uses various computer programs and software, both in the office and in the field, to conduct inspections, photograph and document violations, generate notices, and track activity.
Requirements
Associate’s degree in building design/inspection with a minimum of four years of practical experience as a citation officer, compliance officer, building official and/or inspector (or related position) required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Must possess a valid driver's license and must be able to successfully complete ICC "Property Maintenance and Housing" examination within one year of employment.
