The City of Roanoke is seeking a Combination Inspector II to review building plans and inspect all new construction, additions and alterations of buildings and structures including one- and two-family dwellings and commercial sites for compliance with all City and State codes and ordinances. Job responsibilities include investigating appeals and conducting field inspections to examine special problems and specific complaints; examining plans, specifications and materials; and making inspection of building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical system for compliance with current code requirements. Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with major course work in plumbing, mechanical electrical systems or related field; three to five years related experience and/or training in the installations, repair, maintenance or inspection of building, plumbing/mechanical and electrical systems; 4 years related experience in general building construction; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Virginia Certification as Combination Inspector 1& 2 Family Dwelling and Combination Inspector General in building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. Possession of a valid appropriate drivers permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Reviews building plans and inspects all new construction, additions and alterations of buildings and structures including one-and two-family dwellings and commercial sites for compliance with all City and State codes and ordinances.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Investigates appeals and conducts field inspections to examine special problems and specific complaints
Initiates the issuance of stop work orders and summons to Court; provides testimony of code violations
Takes applications and issues building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits
Inspects quality of materials, methods of construction and existing buildings for hazardous conditions
Examines plans, specifications and materials; makes inspection of building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical system for compliance with current code requirements
Consult with architects, engineers and the general public on technical assistance.
Stays abreast of new materials and building methods by attending seminars and lectures as new techniques are introduced
Consideration will be given to candidates who do not yet fully qualify as Combination Inspector II in terms of certifications as Combination Inspector I or Building Inspector with opportunity for immediate promotion upon obtaining required certifications.
