- Electrical Forensic Engineer
Description
Arcon Forensic Engineers is seeking an Electrical Engineer with a strong interest in forensic investigations and problem solving. In this role, you will investigate electrical failures, fire losses, and equipment malfunctions, determine cause and origin, and provide clear, defensible expert opinions for use in insurance and legal proceedings. This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on fieldwork, root-cause analysis, and translating complex technical findings into clear, well-supported conclusions.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct forensic investigations involving a wide variety of electrical systems including building wiring, distribution and protection equipment, transformers, chillers/motors, appliances, control systems, and industrial equipment.
- Investigate fire and electrical loss claims, including origin and cause analysis, repair cost assessment, extent of damage, and reparability.
- Perform detailed site inspections, document evidence, and coordinate or perform testing when required.
- Provide support to fire investigation team for inspection of electrical equipment and installations.
- Prepare clear, concise, and defensible expert reports for insurers, adjusters, and legal counsel.
- Review electrical designs, installation practices, maintenance records, and compliance with codes and standards.
- Provide expert opinion and, when required, support litigation through mediations, depositions, and court appearances.
- Collaborate with insurance adjusters, fire investigators, lawyers, and multidisciplinary forensic teams.
- Assist in resolving disputed claims through technical analysis and professional judgment
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., Ontario Electrical Safety Code, CSA standards)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (preferred)
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant electrical engineering experience (forensic, power systems, or building systems preferred).
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, components, and failure mechanisms.
- Experience with site inspections and failure analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to write technical reports.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for field investigations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience in forensic engineering, fire investigations, or insurance claims.
- Familiarity with electrical fire origin and cause investigations.
- Experience with expert witness work, including report writing, affidavits, or testimony.
- Knowledge of Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC), CSA standards, installation and maintenance practices.
- Certifications or training in fire investigation (e.g., CFEI. CFI, CFPS) or failure analysis
