Description
This job is located in the Construction Inspection Section of the Development Center in the Development Services Department of The City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of the Chief Electrical Inspector. Employees of this classification utilize skills, knowledge and abilities which may have been acquired prior to assuming the responsibilities of the position. Essential job functions include: conducting inspections to ensure the proper installation and safe operation of elevators, escalators, people lifts, and freight elevators. The Elevator Inspector I is responsible for witnessing tests which may involve a degree of personal risk. The employee works independently in enforcing codes and specifications outlined in International Building Code, National Electrical Code, and national elevator code books. Work products are periodically reviewed at the discretion of the Elevator Inspector II and/or Chief Electrical Inspector.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of proper materials and devices used in elevator construction.
Knowledge of properly operating elevator systems.
Knowledge of procedures for testing elevator systems.
Knowledge of and skill in following safety procedures.
Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and drawings.
Skill in assessing the overall condition of different elevators, escalators and people lift systems.
Skill in using standard office equipment.
Skill in recording information accurately.
Skill in communicating verbally and in writing using tact and diplomacy.
Ability to interpret, explain, and apply knowledge of elevator, electrical, and building codes to work performed.
Ability to perform acceptance, annual, five year and remodel inspection tests.
Ability to work independently in the performance of assigned tasks.
Ability and willingness to make objective decisions.
Ability and willingness to work in enclosed or high areas.
Possession of a current State of Oklahoma Elevator Inspector License.*
Possession of a current State of Oklahoma Qualified Elevator Inspector Certification.**
Possession of valid driver license (Operator).
*NOTE: Licenses must be issued by the State of Oklahoma or a state having reciprocity with the State of Oklahoma.
**NOTE: State Law and/or City Ordinance require that the employee possess or obtain a permanent State Elevator Inspector License and Qualified Elevator Inspector Certification within one (1) year from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion. If an individual is selected who does not possess a permanent State Elevator Inspector License and a Qualified Elevator Inspector Certification, that individual will be classified as a Building Inspector Provisional and be compensated at the Building Inspector Provisional salary range until such time as the license and certification are obtained. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a State Elevator Inspector License and Qualified Elevator Inspector Certification within one (1) year from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion/promotion.
The Elevator Inspector I shall not be interested directly or indirectly in any elevator business within the City. The Elevator Inspector I shall not perform any elevator work within the City.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Inside and outside; exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc.
Possibility of falls from working on and around slippery surfaces such as construction sites after it has rained, snowed, etc.
Will work from ladders, floors with no surrounding walls, etc., 12 feet or more above ground level.
Will work near moving machinery, power tools, and vehicles in motion.
Exposed to steady and fairly loud noises from machinery and equipment used at construction sites.
Exposed to large amounts of dust when performing inspections at construction sites.
Possibility of severe electrical shock when inspecting electrical connections that handle electrical power up to 480 volts or more.
May be required to work irregular hours such as shifts, weekends, and holidays, and be on 24-hour call.
Local travel on a daily basis to conduct inspections.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Extent flexibility, mobility, and balance enough to bend, twist, climb, and reach out to perform duties such as conducting inspections.
Arm-hand steadiness, manual dexterity, and finger dexterity enough to perform duties such as operating manual and power tools to remove panels, covers, etc.
Near vision enough to read items such as blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, code books, equipment labels, etc.
Far vision enough to perform duties such as driving a vehicle.
Visual color discrimination enough to check installation of color-coded wires.
Speech and hearing enough to communicate clearly and distinctly in person, by telephone, and in a noisy environment.
