- Founding Product Application Engineer - Transformer Monitoring
Description
About Magnefy
Magnefy is a Stanford spinout building the “ECG for power infrastructure” — an AI-driven edge intelligence platform that detects hidden anomalies in transformers and energy assets months before failure with high accuracy and minimal false positives, helping mission-critical operators across renewable energy, factories, data centers, and utilities optimize power efficiency and infrastructure resiliency in the AI era.
We’ve proven the technology and are now validating and deploying our commercial hardware/software prototype with utilities, data centers, and renewable energy operators. If you want to bring breakthrough technology into mission-critical infrastructure at scale, this is the time to join!
Role Overview
We’re looking for a Founding Product Application Engineer to own end-to-end customer success — from late-stage pipeline through deployment and post-sale support — while also contributing hands-on to IoT and sensor product development. This role will feed critical field insights back into the design and improvement of both hardware and software systems. It is a highly cross-functional role at the intersection of product, application engineering, and business development, with direct impact on pilot success and commercialization.
What You’ll Own
- Product Development & Engineering Contribution: Apply strong fundamental engineering principles to improve the design, integration, reliability, and scalability of both the hardware and software platform — especially around installation workflows, usability, deployment efficiency, and overall customer experience.
- Pilot Deployment & Customer Success: Lead onsite deployments of transformer and inverter monitoring systems, manage pilot execution end-to-end, and ensure an outstanding customer experience from onboarding through post-deployment support.
- Field Execution & Technical Problem Solving: Troubleshoot hardware, firmware, networking, and installation challenges in real-world environments such as utilities, renewable energy sites, and data centers while proactively de-risking deployments.
- Customer-Driven Product Improvement: Translate field learnings and customer feedback into actionable product improvements by working closely with hardware, firmware, AI, and product teams.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Serve as the technical bridge between customers and internal teams while helping build the foundation, processes, and best practices for the future Applications Engineering organization.
Why This Role
- Own a mission-critical function at a pivotal stage: Lead successful deployments that directly drive revenue, pilots, and commercialization while working side-by-side with the founding team to shape the product, customer experience, and technical roadmap.
- Build and scale from the ground up: Help establish the foundation for the future Applications/Solutions Engineering team while contributing to the culture, operating principles, and growth of a deeply technical, mission-driven startup.
General Information
- Location: San Francisco Bay Area (Hybrid)
- Comp: $90-130K + founding team member equity
- Travel: Up to 30% (domestic + international)
Requirements
What We’re Looking For
Core Fundamentals
- Strong foundation in electrical engineering, including power quality, harmonics, transient behavior, and insulation physics (e.g., partial discharge mechanisms).
- Solid understanding of power systems, including transformers, switchgear, inverters, and grid infrastructure.
- Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
Field & Domain Experience
- 3+ years commissioning, deploying, or servicing monitoring or diagnostic systems on medium- to high-voltage (MV/HV) assets, including PPE, grounding, and clearance procedures, with experience in:
- Transformer condition monitoring (e.g., partial discharge, DGA, bushing, thermal diagnostics)
- Diagnostics equipment and standards (e.g., Omicron, Doble, Megger, etc.)
- Hands-on experience performing electrical measurements and diagnostics, using tools such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and DAQs to capture, analyze, and troubleshoot signals in noisy field environments (including sensor setup, signal acquisition and calibration).
- Experience in product or application engineering within energy or industrial environments.
- Bonus: Experience working with utilities, IPPs, OEMs, or data centers.
- Bonus: Experience with IEC 60270 and 62478 or IEEE C57.113 and C57.127 test standards.
- Bonus: Certified substation engineer.
- Bonus Experience building or scaling field or applications engineering teams.
Cultural Fit
- Proactive and action-oriented — you don’t wait to be told what to do; you identify gaps, follow through quickly, and keep momentum moving.
- An excellent communicator — you over-communicate when needed, ask important questions early, and keep internal teams and external partners aligned.
- Comfortable with ambiguity — you can operate effectively in a fast-moving startup environment where priorities evolve and not everything is fully defined.
- High ownership and accountability — you take responsibility for outcomes, communicate risks clearly, and are thoughtful about what you can and cannot commit to.
- Customer-centered — you care deeply about delivering real-world value and staying close to what customers need in the field.
- Growth-minded and resilient — you are secure in what you know, honest about what you don’t, and excited to learn, adapt, and improve quickly.
Education
- B.S./M.S./Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
- 3+ years of relevant experience
