What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking a Mechanical Trades - Water Treatment
As an experienced Mechanical Trades Specialist for Water Treatment, you will play a critical role in maintaining and optimizing water treatment facilities serving complex mechanical systems that support our cutting-edge research and facility operations. The ideal candidate will have expertise in HVAC, refrigeration, piping, and boiler systems. This position offers the opportunity to apply your technical expertise, lead projects, and collaborate with engineers and fellow trades professionals in a dynamic, safety-focused environment.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Manage chemical water treatment processes, including testing and operation of closed and open loop water systems and chemical injection systems.
- Collaborate with engineers and trades teams to clarify specifications and implement solutions that meet operational, and safety standards related to the water treatment system.
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform corrective maintenance on a wide range of facility mechanical equipment, including HVAC, refrigeration, piping, and boiler systems.
- Lead predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance efforts to ensure system reliability and efficiency.
- Utilize advanced building automation control systems to monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize HVAC/R system performance.
- Apply your expertise with industry-standard tools and piping assembly techniques (compression, flared, threaded, brazed, soldered).
- Diagnose and resolve electrical and control system issues in single and three-phase HVAC/R equipment.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior trades personnel, contributing to team development and knowledge sharing.
- As a condition of employment, this position is represented by the Metal Trades Council (MTC). Represented employees must pay the monthly membership dues or agency fee.
Qualifications We Require
- Strong knowledge of chemical water treatment processes and water system testing.
- Skilled in chemical water treatment and testing water systems.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on HVAC mechanical trades experience, with a strong foundation in installation, maintenance, and repair of complex mechanical systems.
- Universal refrigerant license
- Proven ability to perform predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, piping, boilers, and related systems.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems and building automation/energy management systems.
- Solid understanding of industry safety standards, welding, and cutting techniques.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical and control systems, including pneumatic, electric, and microprocessor-based controls.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain Department of Energy Q clearance.
- Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and dynamic warm-up programs as part of safety and readiness initiative
Qualifications We Desire
- Completion of a State-approved mechanical apprenticeship program.
- Certifications in water treatment or water quality
- New Mexico Journeyman Refrigeration (JR) License
- New Mexico Boiler Certification (BO1 or BO2)
- Experience with large, water-cooled chiller systems (200+ tons) and high-capacity boiler systems (1,000,000+ BTU/hr).
- Familiarity with safety programs such as Engineered Safety, Behavior-Based Safety, NFPA, and OSHA training.
- Hands-on experience with rotary drive compressors, multistage temperature chambers, and advanced building automation systems.
- Active DOE L or Q clearance is a plus.

Department 4844, Mechanical Services, operates and provides preventive and corrective maintenance for mechanical systems associated with buildings at Sandia-NM. This department also provides heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) control, via the Facility Control System, to select buildings at Sandia-NM and Sandia-CA.

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
