- Lead Protection and Controls Engineer
Description
L.L. Blue Engineering is seeking a Lead Protection & Controls Engineer to provide technical leadership for protection and control system engineering projects supporting electric utility, industrial, and critical infrastructure clients. This role is responsible for leading the design, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and modernization of transmission and distribution substation protection and control systems.
The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader for project execution, provide mentorship to engineering staff, support client relationships, and ensure the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions. Responsibilities include developing and reviewing protection and control designs, relay settings, coordination studies, construction packages, and commissioning activities while collaborating with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
This position offers the opportunity to help grow L.L. Blue Engineering's Protection & Controls practice while contributing to projects that support critical infrastructure throughout the power and energy sectors
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in Protection & Controls Engineering.
- Experience with transmission and distribution substation projects.
- Strong knowledge of protective relaying principles and power system protection schemes.
- Experience performing relay settings development, relay coordination studies, and fault analysis.
- Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection and control drawings.
- Experience with microprocessor-based protective relays such as SEL, GE Multilin, ABB, Siemens, or similar platforms.
- Experience supporting field testing, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- 12+ years of Protection & Controls experience.
- Utility consulting or EPC experience.
- Experience with IEC 61850 communications.
- Experience with SCADA, RTAC, and substation automation systems.
- Experience using ETAP, SKM, ASPEN, CAPE, EasyPower, OMICRON Test Universe, or similar software.
- Experience leading engineering teams and mentoring junior engineers.
- Experience supporting proposal development, project planning, and client management.
- Knowledge of transmission, distribution, industrial power systems, and utility commissioning practices.
