Description
The City of Attleboro Water Treatment Plant seeks an Operator-in-Training who assists Water Operators in the operation of the Water Treatment Plant facility and performs other routine laborer duties in relation to the operation of the plant. The Plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round; therefore, shift work is required, including 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m., and 12:00 a.m.–8:00 a.m. shifts. New hires will complete a 6–8-week training period on the day shift (8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) before being assigned to an off-shift schedule.
Duties include operates and maintains equipment including, pumps, screens, and grease collectors. Cleans pumps and sediment screens. Cleans building interiors and exteriors. Checks substations, dams, standpipes and reservoirs. Operates valves, sluice gates, sludge gates and related equipment. Checks watershed levels and makes proper adjustments to prevent loss of water. Conducts security checks at Water Department properties. Records hourly chlorine, pH, turbidity, and storage tank levels and rates chemical pumps. Calibrates lab equipment. Receives bulk chemical deliveries at the Wading River Plant once Grade T1 license is obtained. Performs bacteria sampling and other minor lab duties. Takes public phone calls and complaints during emergency water breaks and assists road crew if necessary. May be required to participate in City snow and ice removal programs. Performs related duties as required.
Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent required. Valid state driver’s license. Must obtain a Grade T-1 license within one year of employment. Must obtain a Grade T-3 license within one year of becoming eligible under Massachusetts state guidelines. Significant physical effort required in performing duties under adverse weather conditions. Must be able to walk and stand for most of the work day. Position requires bending, stooping and lifting up to 100 pounds. Exposure to chemicals, toxic substances and plants. Must be able to work any shift in 24/7 operation of the plant. Ability to read and follow instructions and SDS sheets. Good basic math skills. Good communication skills.
