Sisson & Banyas IP Law is seeking a licensed U.S. patent attorney with a focus on mechanical or chemical engineering to join our growing practice.
Responsibilities
Drafting, filing, and prosecuting U.S. patent applications – including appeals.
Conducting prior art searches.
Meeting with customers (at their facilities, virtually, or at the Firm’s offices) to develop patent filing, prosecution, and enforcement strategies.
Advising customers on domestic and international patent strategy.
Working with attorneys and associates in other countries to develop patent filing, prosecution, and enforcement strategies for their customers entering the United States.
Negotiating and drafting intellectual property agreements including licenses, joint development agreements, and the like.
Conducting and assisting on in-court and out-of-court patent enforcement efforts.
Representing the Firm at various marketing and customer development events including the SEMA Show, AIPPI, INTA, and more.
Requirements
Proven experience in patent law with a focus on mechanical or chemical engineering inventions.
Strong research skills using platforms such as LexisNexis and Westlaw for legal research and prior art analysis.
Excellent legal drafting abilities with attention to detail and clarity in technical documentation.
Effective negotiation skills for licensing agreements and dispute resolution.
Exceptional writing skills combined with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high-quality standards.
Preference may be given to candidates who have non-legal business experience in R&D, product development, manufacturing, or related areas.
Though not required, candidates with experience working with foreign customers or foreign associates are encouraged to apply.
Though not required, experience in marketing, sales, and customer relationship management is preferred.
Though not required, experience filing and prosecuting trademark and copyright applications is preferred.
Education
Licensed patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
3 to 5+ years of experience as outside or in-house patent counsel drafting and prosecuting U.S. patent applications.
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in or mechanical or chemical engineering or physics.
