POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform research work within the lab, whose focus is chemical biology and drug discovery. This position will implement established cell-based assay protocols to support collaborative projects seeking to validate new therapeutic targets in cancer. The research assistant will work closely with the principal investigator, laboratory members and the adjacent Small Molecule Drug Development (SMDD) Core.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform research work involving use of lab skills. Implement established cell based assay protocols to evaluate small molecules relevant to cancer. (55%)
Conduct analysis of assay samples. Work closely with the principal investigator to analyze newly-generated samples using standard analytical methods. (10%)
Record results from cell-based assays and share data with laboratory members and Small Molecule Drug Development Core staff. (10%)
Maintain records of experiments. Keep detailed procedures and summaries of all cell-based experiments using an established e-notebook system. (10%)
Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments. Perform routine lab maintenance, including standard maintenance of small instruments. (10%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Order laboratory supplies. Maintain all standard reagents and supplies used in the execution of project-specific assays. (5%)
Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)
CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with the principal investigator, lab graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to help execute the desired experiments. Regular contact with the managing director of the Small Molecule Drug Development Core Facility to facilitate transfer of samples and data and with collaborators of the lab.
University: Daily contact with support personnel, department assistants and principal investigators from other departments and centers across the university campus to exchange information.
External: Occasional contact with outside vendors as needed, to exchange information.
Students: Regular contact with student workers in the lab for general lab assistance.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
None.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Knowledge and understanding of common concepts, practices and procedures within the field of chemical biology.
Knowledge of good laboratory skills and practices is required. Knowledge of laboratory practices for mammalian cell culture is necessary. Prior experience running assays in 384-well plates preferred.
Excellent communication skills: must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, school and university and with individuals outside the university.
Strong interpersonal skills: ability to effectively work with various individuals throughout the department, school, university and individuals external to the university. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in order to achieve a goal or complete a task.
Strong organization skills: must be detail oriented, possess the ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines and demonstrate attention to accuracy and have the ability to keep accurate and complete records.
Ability to problem solve effectively and demonstrate good analytical skills, good judgment and logical decision making.
Ability to work under moderate supervision. Must demonstrate a strong work ethic, self-motivation and a commitment to high quality.
Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Mac and/or Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), GraphPad Prism, and with internet navigation. Ability to learn and apply software programs and applications as needed.
Must demonstrate flexibility; must be able and willing to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to shifting priorities, demands and timelines.
Willingness and ability to rely on and follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
Ability to effectively receive and implement constructive feedback to improve the quality of lab experiments.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.
Willingness to learn and work with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and technologies.

WORKING CONDITIONS
General laboratory environment, including potential for use of biosafety level 2 lab areas. This position will have contact with or exposure to the following hazards: blood-borne pathogens, chemicals and infectious agents. Laboratory safety and blood-borne pathogen training is required and will be provided. Appropriate personal protective equipment including gloves, lab coat, and protective eyewear will be provided to limit exposure to hazards.
