SUMMARY OF THE POSITION:
Under the direction of the COO, the Safety / Compliance Manager is solely responsible for developing, maintaining, and implementing a company-wide safety and compliance program as well as ensuring all state and federal motor vehicle regulatory requirements are met by the company. Span of responsibility covers all company-wide loss prevention and risk management control programs, including occupational health and safety, transportation (DOT), environmental protections, and/or other related loss prevention and control functions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include the following and others may be assigned)
- Directs and participates in the development of programs, initiatives, practices, and training to improve workplace safety.
- Plans, organizes, and administers, a company-wide loss prevention and control program to identify and analyze potential exposure to loss; develops related goals and other program performance expectations.
- Examines, designs, and implements alternative risk management and mitigation techniques, strategies, and measures. Monitors the effectiveness of techniques and makes changes as required.
- Serves as a liaison with applicable internal departments regarding regulatory safety and compliance matters.
- Conducts periodic risk prevention audits of company assets and oversees inspections performed by outside agencies.
- Manages, directs, and oversees the investigation, administration, and closure of worker’s compensation insurance claims.
- Obtain working knowledge of company software packages (Agris, DocMgt. Etc.) to be able to make entries and inquires, run reports, and use proper GL coding system.
- Track safety training topics and meetings for entire company.
- Allocate time to suggested three (3) days in the field and two (2) days in the office.
- Ensure the fleet of trucks adheres to the Department of Transportation regulations at the state and federal level.
- Oversee protocols such as DOT physical exams, drug testing program (random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return to duty, follow-up, etc.) and employee licensing.
- Maintain DOT driver qualification files.
- Develop training materials, evaluating training programs, scheduling trainings, delivering programs, and record keeping for all DOT compliance matters.
- Timely complete and file all regulatory reporting items for agencies such as: DOT, OSHA, FDA, EPA, DHS, DHHS, NDEE, SCAC and all others that are applicable to the company.
- Apply for permits and certifications (oversize, IFTA, Hazmat, etc.) for the company.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Knowledge of:
- Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations
- Health, safety, and environmental hazard identification methods.
- Risk management and loss control principles and practices.
Demonstrated Skill in:
- Applying applicable laws, rules, and regulations
- Developing and managing risk management programs and techniques
- Investigating and adjusting claims
- Preparing and maintaining records/reports
- Handling multiple priorities simultaneously
- Communicating detailed reports and information
- Utilizing computer technology used for communication, data gathering and reporting.
- Communicating effectively through oral and written mediums.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid operators license with company approved driving record.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be able to think quickly and perform a mental assessment of workplace hazards, take appropriate precautions, and choose appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as dictated by need, regulation, and labeling.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell; stand; walk; sit and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to lift 50-75 lbs. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may frequently need to climb ladders (greater than 20’) and stairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception. The employee must have the ability to travel by vehicle for several hours. The employee must have the ability to travel in man-lifts to top of bins.
