Description
A safety coordinator at MSD would work closely with the safety specialists and be responsible for ensuring the company’s day-to-day operations meet or exceed all applicable health and safety policies, gain an understanding of the accident investigation process, develop in the hazard identification process and the implementation of corrective measures, and promote a positive safety culture at the District.
Essential Functions:
- Drive personal accountability to improve safety performance across business segments and serve as a liaison between management and employees on safety-related issues.
- Provide safety training to employees, supervisors, and managers, including new hires
- Conduct safety audits and inspections to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
- Conduct field safety observations aimed at identifying risks with follow-up communications to supervision and management.
- Coordinates the inspection of safety equipment and provides training
- Assists in updating District safety policies and procedures.
- Responsible for documentation of safety training and incident reports and providing information to supervision and management.
- Assist in maintaining emergency action plans and coordinating drills.
- Provide safety support for operations in the pump station, collection, and treatment plants. Provide safety support for other departments as needed.
- Investigate incidents and accidents to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
- Collaborate with safety specialist and safety manager to ensure District safety policies and procedures are being met.
- Occasionally provide support outside of normal working hours.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform related work as required or as delegated by supervisor.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field OR high school diploma (GED) and five years of experience in working in general, construction, or a utility sector.
Desirable Skills and Knowledge:
- Certifications: OSHA 10 or 30, CHST preferred.
- Exposure to principles and practices of safety-related investigations.
- Exposure to accident prevention methods and procedures.
- Exposure to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety. standards that apply in a construction or industrial workplace.
- Considerable skills in communicating effectively both orally and written.
- Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use problem-solving abilities.
- Intermediate level in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Public speaking and presentation skills, ability to engage diverse audiences.
Special Requirements:
- Must obtain the OSHA 511 within six months of employment or assuming the role.
- Must obtain the Specialist in Safety and Health (SSH) General Industry within a year of employment or assuming the role.
- Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state in which the employee resides. Must be able to provide transportation for field work.
- Pursuant to MSD's "Substance Abuse Policy and Procedures," this position has been designated as safety sensitive and candidate must pass a Non-D.O.T. Drug Test for this position. Employees occupying this position are not subject to Federal (D.O.T.) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.
- Current employees of MSD must have meets expectation on their most recent performance evaluation.
