Summary
As the Senior Process Engineer (SPE) your primary objectives are to:
- Oversee, assess, and resolve issues concerning plant equipment, processes, and systems to identify and mitigate potential risks, while also striving to maintain or enhance plant performance.
- Identify and develop initiatives focused on optimizing production efficiency, maximizing operational uptime, and improving energy and chemical usage in a manner consistent with established industry best practices, ensuring safety and efficiency.
- Take a leadership role in departmental deliverables and foster effective collaboration with other departments and stakeholders to fulfill the organization's objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts daily monitoring of the plant and provides strategic recommendations to the Operations Superintendent and Process Superintendent to enhance operations and rectify any discrepancies.
- Exhibits comprehensive expertise in Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements alongside ISO Quality Systems, demonstrating the capacity to take a leadership role in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) studies, including, but not limited to, HAZOP, What-if Analysis, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA).
- Offers technical guidance and endorses reports and calculations pertaining to the performance evaluation of all major plant equipment and catalysts (Approach to Equilibrium, Carbon Efficiency) to facilitate the early identification of potential issues.
- Develops and evaluates technical proposals relating to the design intent of processes, plant reliability, abnormal situation management, production, efficiency, equipment, safety, and the environment from a technical, financial, and risk management perspective.
- Takes a leadership role in evaluating plant trips and conducting incident investigations, preparing reports as necessary.
- Oversees the effective management of chemical treatments for Raw Water, Cooling Water, Demineralization, Boiler Feed Water, and Wastewater, along with the management of associated contracts.
- Assists in the formulation and monitoring of the departmental budget, ensuring that expenditures remain within the prescribed limits.
- Evaluates and approves external engineering studies and deliverables related to the design of relief systems, equipment sizing, dispersion assessments, and modifications to the plant.
- Provides mentorship and training to Junior Process Engineers, including the identification of growth opportunities, assessment of training requirements, and implementation of suitable interventions.
- Offers support to Operations personnel during startup, shutdown, and atypical operating conditions.
- Assumes a primary role in the planning of Scheduled Turnarounds (STA), overseeing catalyst changeouts, resin replacements, monitoring of environmental discharges, heat exchanger tube cleaning, and the coordination of Management of Change (MOC) documentation.
Qualification
- Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Process Engineering.
Requirements
Relevant Experience
- Minimum of nine (9) years of experience in a Methanol process plant environment.
- Minimum of three (3) years direct supervisory, mentoring, or project-leadership experience.
Required Skills
- Strong proficiency in both written and verbal communication.
- Capacity to exhibit self-motivation, assertiveness, emotional intelligence, and empathy.
- Exceptional critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proven capability to maintain accurate and well-organized records.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of project management principles, spanning from conceptualization to handover.
- Demonstrated expertise in utilizing the Microsoft Office suite.
- Proficient in utilizing Process Engineering Simulation Software, including HYSYS, Flare System Analyzer, and Exchanger Design and Rating, as well as performing comprehensive engineering calculations.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Plant Optimization, including both routine operations and project work, as well as in Turnarounds, encompassing Catalyst Works. Additionally, experience in Process Safety Management and HAZOPs is required.
- Familiarity with ISO Quality Systems would be considered an asset.
