Description
Advanced Engineering Consultants (AEC) is seeking a Technology Engineer with over 10 years of experience to lead the design and coordination of low-voltage and technology systems for commercial and institutional construction projects. This role focuses on developing structured cabling infrastructure, security systems, and audio-visual systems from concept through construction documentation.
The Senior Technology Engineer will serve as a technical leader responsible for delivering coordinated designs, supporting multidisciplinary project teams, and mentoring junior engineers and designers.
The Senior Technology Engineer will be an integral part of the Columbus office, supporting projects across multiple offices. This person must be a team player, working closely with clients, team partners, and fellow staff to produce engineering drawings and documents. This person must have strong communication skills, be detailed oriented, and well organized.
Key Responsibilities
Technology System Design
- Provide technology system designs for various governmental, educational, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects.
- Design structured cabling systems including copper and fiber optic backbone and horizontal distribution infrastructure.
- Develop designs for security systems, including:
- Access control
- Video surveillance (CCTV)
- Intrusion detection
- Design and coordinate audio-visual systems for conference rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, and collaboration spaces.
- Prepare technology system layouts, riser diagrams, device schedules, and infrastructure pathways.
- Coordinate with electrical and IT infrastructure to ensure proper power, grounding, and network integration.
- Develop telecommunications room layouts, equipment racks, and cable management systems.
- Perform field verification of existing systems for renovation projects and assessment reports.
- Communicate with manufacturer representatives to determine solutions for specific applications.
- Coordinate with internal and external subconsultants of other disciplines, such as architects, mechanical and structural engineers, etc. for a fully coordinated design.
Project Leadership & Coordination
- Serve as lead technology engineer on projects from schematic design through construction administration.
- Coordinate technology systems with architects, electrical engineers, IT consultants, and construction teams.
- Participate in client meetings, programming sessions, and design reviews to understand technology needs.
- Attend meetings authorities having jurisdiction, and other professionals as projects require.
- Perform project construction administration including response to RFI’s, review of submittals, preparation of bulletins, review of contactor change orders, field visits and punch trips for installation verification.
Documentation & Standards
- Prepare and review construction drawings and technical specifications for technology systems.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards and guidelines including:
- TIA/EIA telecommunications standards
- BICSI design guidelines
- Applicable building and electrical codes
- Maintain internal design standards and quality control procedures.
System Integration & Planning
- Coordinate integration between structured cabling, security, AV, and other building technology systems.
- Plan for future expansion and scalability of technology infrastructure.
- Support network and IT infrastructure planning in collaboration with client IT teams.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.
- Review drawings and calculations for accuracy and completeness.
- Review designs prepared by others as part of AEC's QA/QC process.
- Support team development and knowledge sharing.
Requirements
Job Requirements/Qualifications
- US Citizenship.
- BISCI RCDD Certification.
- 10+ Years of designing building technology systems for commercial or institutional projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, telecommunications Engineering, or related field from an accredited university, preferred.
- Proficient in Revit and AutoCAD.
- Experience in designing Federal DOD, State, Municipal, Healthcare, Commercial, Public Sector, Education, and/or Institutional projects.
- Demonstrated experience in design of structured cabling, telecommunications infrastructure, security systems, audio-visual design and other low voltage building related infrastructure systems.
- Strong understanding of low-voltage pathways, spaces, and equipment layouts.
- Experience producing construction documents and specifications.
- Strong understanding of, and able to apply, BICSI, EIA/TIA industry standards, and NEC/NFPA Codes.
- Proficient knowledge of standard construction practices and the ability to work with contractors to address construction issues.
- Project Management experience preferred.
