As a Systems Analyst (job title: R&D Systems Research Analysis), You will use your strong technical foundation to help develop strategies, priorities, and requirements for technology solutions. You will collaborate with our multidisciplinary team to provide decision insight to customers on a wide range of complex multi-domain national security and nuclear enterprise issues such as:
- Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear
- Infrastructure resilience
- Enterprise and laboratory operations
- Emerging threats
- Nuclear weapon modernization and sustainment
- Nuclear enterprise assurance and cybersecurity
On any given day, you may be called on to do the following:
- Identify Stakeholder Requirements: Engage with stakeholders to elicit and understand their needs and challenges, utilizing facilitation and elicitation techniques to define problem scope and gather detailed requirements
- Formulate Requirements: Develop precise and measurable requirements that capture stakeholders' operational needs and constraints, articulating clear problem statements and objectives for potential solutions
- Data Collection and Modeling: Gather quantitative and qualitative data from diverse sources to inform decision-making, and apply analytical and modeling methodologies to objectively design and evaluate alternative solutions
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with experts across disciplines to conduct comprehensive research on emerging technologies and their implications for national security and sector resilience, integrating insights to develop holistic solutions
- Communicate Findings: Prepare and deliver presentations of analytical results and recommendations at conferences and meetings, ensuring clarity and relevance, and enhancing understanding through visualization techniques
- Stakeholder Engagement: Effectively communicate complex system issues and ideas concisely to enable action by customers and stakeholders at all levels of government within the United States as well as internationally, tailoring strategies to ensure accessibility of technical information
- Facilitate Implementation of Solutions: Work with stakeholders to translate analytical findings into actionable strategies and operational plans that effectively address identified national security and resilience challenges
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite and be willing and able to travel up to 25%.

Salary Range
$139,900 - $280,600
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
- Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D S&E Systems Research and Analysis candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation)
- The ability to understand, synthesize, and draw insights from multiple types of data streams (e.g., technical, economic, policy) through the use of various analytical tools
- Experience working as part of multi-disciplinary teams examining complex systems
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of good project management, especially as it pertains to the execution of federally-funded work (e.g., proposal development through annual review, final delivery, and closeout)
- Experience working with federal sponsors in the defense and intelligence sectors, as well as their domestic FFRDC partners, international partnering agencies, and foreign governments
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams delivering critical information to customers in a succinct manner
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Experience or education related to at least one of the following disciplines: Chemical, Biological, Radiological, or Nuclear (CBRN) Security, agriculture security, economics, and/or risk and decision science
- Knowledge of and experience applying AI/ML methods and tools
- Experience conducting facilitation and elicitation processes to gather stakeholder insights and requirements, and utilizing risk and decision science analysis tools and methods across various data types
- Active DOE Q-level security clearance
About Our Team
Work in 8710 covers a range of topics in national security, including nuclear weapons, homeland security, and internal studies. The focus is on providing national leaders with reliable, unbiased, and comprehensive information on viable engineering and strategy options, along with assessments of their effectiveness, risks, and consequences. Nuclear weapons work encompasses stockpile studies, surety systems analysis, cost estimation, and future stockpile planning analysis. Homeland security efforts involve analyses, simulations, and prototype technology deployments that address defense against biological, chemical, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) terrorism, as well as emerging cybersecurity threats.
The Systems Analysis and Reliability group combines technical depth, cross-domain breadth, and multiple analytic disciplines to deliver products that inform decision-makers and facilitate evaluation of options and tradeoffs.
8714 Systems Research and Analysis II department has a focus in homeland security missions (critical infrastructure risk methods development, food and agriculture security, public health security, CBRN challenges, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence). However, Systems Analysts may be called upon to support any of our national security missions across the laboratory.
Teams engage in dynamic collaborations across the group and with laboratory organizations to leverage world-class technical expertise in addressing complex national and global security challenges.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
